Students’ unions of higher institutions express our animosity towards the recent assault and false imprisonment against Hong Kong journalists in China. Reporters from Commercial Radio were surrounded and reporters from i-Cable were kicked and beaten by local officials in Sichuan. Four days later, a photojournalist from NOW News faced assault and unreasonable imprisonment in Beijing when covering a Beijing Lawyers Association hearing and was made to sign a “statement of repentance”. Such tyrannical acts shall be condemned.
The Union will host” Consultation forum with the university management” on this Friday.
Professor Peter Mathieson announced his resignation through email to all members of the University two days ago, stating that he will end his term of office early in January 2018 and take up the position of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh. Regarding his decision to resign, Professor Mathieson never discussed or reported such matter during any HKU Council meetings. He also failed to complete his term of office till March 2019. The Union regrets and is shocked by his act of irresponsibility.
