Declaration of HKUSU in response to the resignation of Professor Peter Mathieson as President and Vice-Chancellor

Professor Peter Mathieson announced his resignation through email to all members of the University two days ago, stating that he will end his term of office early in January 2018 and take up the position of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh. Regarding his decision to resign, Professor Mathieson never discussed or reported such matter during any HKU Council meetings. He also failed to complete his term of office till March 2019. The Union regrets and is shocked by his act of irresponsibility.

Holding the Review Panel Accountable for the Delayed Report

With the continuous effort made by university members in striving for a reform in university governance, the Council agreed to establish the Review Panel on University Governance in the beginning of 2016. Professor Sir Malcolm Grant; Professor William C. Kirby, T.M Chang, and Mr. Peter Van Tu Nguyen were appointed as members of the Review Panel in April. It is expected that the report would be completed by end of the year of 2016. In June, the Review Panel visited the university and met with different stakeholders. They reconfirmed that the report shall be submitted to Council by October.
